A Hope Hack is a day-long workshop that aims to give young people aged 15-25 a voice and focuses on their hopes for the future. The Hope Collective have been running a series of ‘Hope Hack’ events across the length and breadth of the UK. The purpose of these events is to listen to thousands of young people speaking about what they think would make for a fairer and safer society. The views, thoughts and ideas are collated from the young people and can help to shape interventions moving forward, both locally and nationally.
We aim to hold two Hope Hacks over the 2024-25 financial year: one in Derby City and one in the county. The Hope Collective provide the framework, guidance and potentially some facilitation, and the Serious Violence partnership hosts the events. The information gathered forms the foundations of further work regarding Serious Violence. They are seen as being a very positive means of engaging communities.
The Hope Collective

Formed originally to support the 20th anniversary legacy campaign for Damilola Taylor, the Hope Collective is driven by a shared purpose – to establish real change that enables UK’s most vulnerable communities to be free from poverty, violence and discrimination.
The Hope Collective co-designs solutions that deliver for young people, amplify their voices and focus hopes for the future. The Hope Collective brings its networks together to create long term solutions that engage communities and influence policy making, to bring about positive change.
Through activity led by the Hope Collective, young people can discuss their thoughts and solutions on issues that affect them, their lives and their communities. The goal of the Hope Collective is to ‘change the narrative’ for young people and focus on solutions, not symptoms, and most importantly to focus on their hopes for the future.
They do not just want to change the conversation around negative issues impacting young people, they want to change the environment and build momentum for a fairer society that gives every young person equal opportunities.
Derby City Hope Hack
On 11th November 2024, Derby Theatre hosted the 35th Hope Hack. The topics for the 35th Hope Hack—racism, connections, social media, and relationships with the police—were chosen based on feedback gathered from focus groups held across schools in Derbyshire by VRU staff.
