Supporting families, schools, and communities
The Schools Exclusion Programme is an intervention dedicated to reducing school exclusions and promoting social inclusion for Roma families in Derby and Derbyshire. The NCAT (New Communities Achievement Team) has been at the forefront of delivering vital services, thanks to funding from the Serious Violence Partnership.
It is well known that young people excluded from school have a much higher chance of becoming involved in serious violence and criminal activity. This intervention aims to prevent school exclusions by supporting the whole family and addressing the issues that the Roma community face.
Below, you can learn more about the services of the NCAT and how their work supports our strategy.
Drop-in service at Rosehill Family Hub
The Drop-in Service at Rosehill Family Hub is a cornerstone of the NCAT’s work, offering tailored support to New Arrival families, including asylum seekers, refugees, and economic migrants. With enhanced funding, we’ve expanded our reach to address specific challenges faced by Roma families, including:
- Poverty and homelessness
- Domestic abuse
- Community cohesion
- EU Settlement Scheme applications
- Financial difficulties and debt
- Access to education/children missing education (CME)
- Health and housing services
- Youth Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET)
In addition to the drop-in service, we offer outreach support for hard-to-reach Roma families, delivering services in the majority of CEE (Central Eastern European) languages spoken by the community. This outreach is facilitated by our two caseworker model, increasing capacity and effectiveness.
Direct school support
Through additional funding, the Schools Exclusion Programme has strengthened its direct support for schools, addressing the rising challenge of school exclusions among Roma students. Our targeted support focuses on students at greater risk of school exclusion, which often leads to social exclusion.
This intervention is vital for both students and their families, ensuring that they receive the resources and assistance they need to succeed academically and socially.

The NCAT works tirelessly to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for Roma families in Derby and Derbyshire. By expanding their capacity and tailoring services to the community’s needs, we aim to:
